چکیده

Using Chandra archival data, we have begun a study to quantify the evolution of cluster morphology with redshift. To quantify cluster morphology, we use the power ratio method developed by Buote and Tsai (1995). Power ratios are constructed from moments of the twodimensional gravitational potential and are, therefore, related to a cluster’s dynamical state. Our sample will include around 50 clusters from the Chandra archive with redshifts between 0.11 and 1.1. These clusters were selected from two fairly complete flux-limited X-ray surveys (the ROSAT Bright Cluster Sample and the Einstein Medium Sensitivity Survey), and additional high-redshift clusters were selected from recent ROSAT flux-limited surveys. Here we present preliminary results from the first 15 clusters in this sample. Of these, eight have redshifts below 0.5, and seven have redshifts above 0.5. 1.

The morphological and dynamical evolution of simulated galaxy clusters

We explore the morphological and dynamical evolution of galaxy clusters in simulations using scalar and vector-valued Minkowski valuations and the concept of fundamental plane relations. In this context, three questions are of fundamental interest: 1. How does the average cluster morphology depend on the cosmological background model? 2. Is it possible to discriminate between different cosmolog...

The dynamical evolution of fractal star clusters: the survival of substructure

We simulate the dynamics of fractal star clusters, in order to investigate the evolution of substructure in recently formed clusters. The velocity dispersion is found to be the key parameter determining the survival of substructure. In clusters with a low initial velocity dispersion, the ensuing collapse of the cluster tends to erase substructure, although some substructure may persist beyond t...

Group-cluster Merging and the Formation of Starburst Galaxies

A significant fraction of clusters of galaxies are observed to have substructure, which implies that merging between clusters and subclusters is a rather common physical process of cluster formation. It still remains unclear how cluster merging affects the evolution of cluster member galaxies. We report the results of numerical simulations, which show the dynamical evolution of a gas-rich late-...

The Evolution of Substructure in Galaxy, Group and Cluster Haloes II: Global Properties

In a previous paper, we described a new method for including detailed information about substructure in semi-analytic models of dark matter halo formation based on merger trees. In this paper, we present the basic predictions of our full model of halo formation. We first describe the overall properties of substructure in galaxy, group or cluster haloes at the present day. We then discuss the ev...

Galaxy Supercluster Analysis and Visualization: Project Goals

Determining the large-scale structure of galaxy distribution in the local universe is currently an active research area in cosmology. Features called superclusters, which are global overdensities of galaxies, are of particular interest. Superclusters are comprised of a collection of galaxy clusters, which are smaller-scale and more dense regions of galaxies, along with the regions between these...

The Spatial Evolution of Stellar Structures in the LMC/SMC

We present an analysis of the spatial distribution of various stellar populations within the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We use optically selected stellar samples with mean ages between ∼ 9 and ∼ 1000 Myr, and existing stellar cluster catalogues to investigate how stellar structures form and evolve within the LMC/SMC. We use two statistical techniques to study the evolution of structure ...
